Lenten Mid-Week Services and Meals
Lenten services begin on Ash Wednesday (February 17) at 7 PM. In keeping with tradition, the Sign of the Cross or Imposition of Ashes will be given to all Christians who wish to receive it. If you would like to learn a bit more about this custom and the meaning of Lent, click here.
For all other Wednesdays during Lent, we will gather at 6 PM for a free soup and sandwich meal, followed by a brief service beginning at 7 PM. All are welcome to participate. These events are held jointly between First Lutheran and Saint George Lutheran near Edinburgh. Dates and locations are as follows:
Feb 24 - Saint George
Mar 3 - First Lutheran
Mar 10 - Saint George
Mar 17 - First Lutheran
Mar 24 - Saint George
These dinners are a good opportunity to grow, renew, and refresh friendships, and the services which follow help us honor Christ's gift to each of us.

Comparative Religion Class
First Lutheran is launching a comparative religion course as part of the Adult Sunday School program. Classes will be held each Sunday from 10:15 until 11:15 AM, beginning on January 17, in the Resource Room. This is an introductory class covering the basics of the world's major religions. The material is derived from a college level course from Great Courses: The Teaching Company. The format will be a mix of lecture, discussion, workshop activities, videos, and guest lecturers from other faiths. We may also take a field trip or two.
Our focus will be to study other faiths to fulfill Jesus' commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:29-31). This course presents the idea that in order to show real love to our neighbors, we must first seek to understand them. Such understanding also helps us better understand our own faith and ways to share it with others (John Chapter 17). The instructors for the class are Tom and Joy Lindsay (376-9038).
Book Club News
The Book Club meets each Sunday at 5:30 PM in the church library. This month, we are discussing Honor in the Dust, by Gilbert Morris. In the genre of historical fiction, this book is the first in a series that is set in the court of King Henry VIII. The book's cost is $10. Don't forget that scholarships are confidentially available! Call Joy Lindsay for more information or to reserve a book.
